Grief, Discrimination, and No I'm Not A Human

Grief, Discrimination, and No I’m Not A Human   Hello everybody! So, today's blog post is going to be a bit different than usual. Instead of a normal written article, I've put together the first episode of the Arcading and Animating Podcast! How exciting is that?      I've gotta say, podcasting is very different to writing. I don't do well with scripts, so I tend to rely on bullet point outlines instead. But getting my thoughts in order is quite a bit harder when I'm speaking out loud. There's certain things I wasn't able to fully touch on during the recording, such as the untrustworthy nature of the government organization FEMA in the game, the characters who are guaranteed to be either humans or visitors and how these particular characters reflect the game's themes, the contradictions and potential flaws of using the game as a direct allegory for discrimination when Visitors are an active and real threat whereas real world discrimination often relies o...

Elio and The State of Disney and Pixar

Elio and The State of Disney and Pixar I remember seeing Elio in theaters. I’ve always been a fan of animated media of all sorts, since I was a kid and well into my adulthood, and I still am today. I remember my mom approaching me about it. I’d never heard of the film in my life, and neither had she, but she was checking our local theater’s website for anything that looked interesting playing soon because we hadn’t been in a while. Lo and behold, there was Elio , and she sent me the trailer. I was immediately intrigued, and we’d decided after some deliberation that we wanted to see it. At the time, I had no idea about the turbulent nature of the film’s development nor the controversy surrounding its queer erasure. If I had, I wouldn’t have been nearly so enthusiastic about it, especially with how personal those particular issues are to me. However, because of my unawareness of the context surrounding the film, I went into the theater with fresh eyes, having heard quite literally nothin...

I’ve Been Playing Pokémon GO For Almost  Ten Years– Is It Still Fun? It’s hard to believe that Pokémon GO , an AR gaming experience which brings the joy of Pokémon into  the real world, has been around for almost ten years now. No, really, it is! Thinking about how much time  has passed since then honestly makes my head spin. Most people probably know about Pokémon GO  from its initial boom back in 2016, when it first came out. It was a real craze for a good few months,  but over time, it died down in popularity, and now, it’s not something that’s often mentioned in  mainstream culture. But is that because it’s fallen off, or simply an effect of the natural lifespan of all  pop-culture trends? Well, I’m someone who’s been playing the game nearly since its inception. I caught my partner pokémon,  a Charmander, back on September 17th of 2016, and I’ve been enjoying the game ever since.  Admittedly, I haven’t been playing particularly consistent...

Look Outside and the Importance of Open Mindedness

Look Outside and the Importance of Open Mindedness Warning! This article contains spoilers for Look Outside. What would you do if one day, you woke up, only to discover that something strange was happening outside and that horrible things would happen to you if you looked at it? Would you be able to resist the temptation to see what was going on around you, or would you gamble your life for just one peek? These are the sorts of things that RPG Maker hit Look Outside welcomes the player to ask as it invites them into its horrifying apocalyptic setting. At first glance, Look Outside seems like a fairly typical horror game, albeit one which stands out in its incredible effectiveness and execution. You play as a protagonist which you can name yourself, but whose default name is Sam. As soon as the game begins, you’re left with a simple choice; look outside or don’t. Of course, if you do, you’re brutalized on the spot. If you don’t, however, your neighbor Sybil will speak up after a while. ...
